Buyer Beware: Mixed Breed Puppies

There has been a lot of noise on the TV recently about so-called ‘designer’ puppies. Basically, pups that have a sire from one breed and a dam from another. The news stories have paid particular attention to Puggles – the crossbreeding of a Pug and a Beagle.

The practice of crossbreeding has now taken on a new twist by labeling the resulting pups as ‘designer’, which then allows the seller to charge a premium. I have actually seen these puppies advertised at prices higher than that of a purebred Pug or a purebred Beagle.

Here are a few facts for you to ponder if you are thinking of buying a Puggle or other type of mixed breed puppy:

Mixed breed pups cannot be registered by AKC because by definition they are not purebred. This may not matter to you.

Forget trying to trace the ancestry of your new puppy. You can try…and the breeder may even offer up some names. Nevertheless, the fact remains that the lineage beyond the pups sire and dam cannot be verified.

There is no Breeder’s Code of Ethics that governs the actions these types of breeders.
